All I know is that I love to write.
It started with a year of anger, unhappiness and my only means of expression. It was the only way I was able to tell my story without actually telling anyone. I have pages and pages full of feelings, thoughts, poetry, and words thrown together that make sense only to me. I was too shy to share and I certainly am not talented in writing in any way. but what I failed to understand is that it’s not always just about how skilled a piece of writing is but the content, feelings, and meaning behind the writing.

In my two semesters in hardboiled, the only Asian Pacific American newsmagazine on campus, I’ve grown and learned so much about writing. For the very first issue I was a part of in hardboiled, I did not contribute to the issue and I still look back and regret that I was too afraid to write. Since then, I use that regret to empower me to start and keep writing. Since then, I’ve been writing articles for every single issue and I will continue to write for every single issue that I am a part of. One of the best feelings was being able to contribute to the spread of issue 16.1: the Richard Aoki issue.

Asian American activist and musician Fred Ho recognized hardboiled for our spread on Richard Aoki. Fred personally said, “this is one of the best reasoned, examined, and well-contextualized pieces by undergrad students at uc berkeley on the rosenfeld accusations towards ricahrd aoki and puts to shame those professrs who think there is ‘evidence’ to support the claim that richard was an informant.” [http://blackbirdpressnews.blogspot.com/2012/11/hardboiled-magazine-on-richard-aoki_7.html]

It’s feedback like this that wakes me up and makes me realize the impact we can have individually and especially when we collaborate and work together. I am so so so humbled by the positive feedback I’ve gotten for this spread and I’m so honored to have worked with 2 intelligent young womyn to write this collaborative spread on defending Richard Aoki. I can’t stress how extremely grateful I am for hardboiled offering me a space to embrace what I love to do. hardboiled gave me a chance to voice myself, see my words in print, and know that there are people reading and listening. It’s a learning process for me; I’m still a beginner, but the feedback and support of my hb family has been so encouraging. Even more so, I learned to write to defend, to speak up, and use what I love to work towards progress and shining light on prevalent issues in the API community. I can’t wait to continue to see hardboiled progress and grow as publication. We’re getting there and we’re advancing with the entire API community with us. We’re not going to be a silenced community.

My college BFF Ashley came to visit (okay, she came to move into her apartment before going to study in SPAIN~ but we’re hanging out both days that she’s staying in the Bay) and you know what that means… GHETTO CRAFTS TIME!!

After getting lost around Alameda and Berkeley a couple times (including going on the wrong freeways LOL) we found our way into multiple thrift stores, got SUPER DUPER LUCKY and got some almost-brand-new books and cheap old clutches to make into our BOOK CLUTCH!

Came back to my house and spent a couple of hours cutting, gluing, and figuring things out. My sisters think we’re crazy (especially since we make “stupid stuff”) but nobody can deny the amount of fun we have when our laughter fills the house :)

It’s so ghetto, but I swear its pretty dang cute. :) I really really want to make more!
